Two-day, hands-on teapot workshop on the wheel.

Advanced throwing and form development workshop, making a teapot with a lid that fit and a spout that pours. We will throw off the hump and trim with a wet chuck. Glazing strategy will be demonstrated.

This workshop focuses on the functional teapot making and developing delicate wheel skills. To keep up with the class, participants should be able to center and make a proper cylinder with confidence.

It’s a 3-day weekend event to showcase the workshop studio. And to help me celebrate, 10 visiting artists from Korea will demonstrate various Korean ceramics techniques each day and help me fire and unload the wood kiln.

ICEX Korean Ceramics Festival is a landmark international ceramics event hosted by Queen City Clay in Cincinnati, bringing together 10 master ceramic artists from Korea for an immersive weekend celebrating traditional and contemporary Korean ceramic practices.

For three days, audiences are invited into a rare cultural exchange showcasing centuries-old techniques alongside innovative contemporary interpretations. Each artist represents a distinct ceramic discipline, offering live demonstrations, lectures, and finished works that illuminate the depth, philosophy, and technical mastery of Korean ceramics.

Welcome to the unique experience of creating a functional work of art over the course of a weekend. You must be comfortable quickly centering and throwing at least 2 pounds of clay to keep up with the pace that allows us to achieve this thing of beauty in this considered timeframe.

Please bring your own throwing tools and apron. Teapot specific tools will be provided. Materials fee $30.

Back by popular demand, The Spectacular Korean Ceramics Tour is scheduled for August 29-September 11, 2024. Tour includes museums, historical sights and interests in Seoul and Icheon Ceramics Village, plus artist studio visits in Yeoju, Geochang and Ulsan.

Tour participants will also have the oportunity to show in a group exhibition, work hands-on with Naked Raku artist, Kim YoungSoo, cobalt painting or Wheels demo at NamYangDoYe in Icheon, throwing workshop at MoonDoBang in SuWon, and fire the Korean traditional Mangdenggi woodfire kiln with Shin YoungTaek in Geochang. (Some activities may change.)

Colibri Pottery Studio welcomes Miki Shim, a Bay Area ceramic artists known for her teapot forms to teach a 2-day hands-on teapot making workshop.

First day will be throwing on the wheel for each element of the teapot: body form, fitted lids, dripless spout and various handle options. On the second day, we will trim and construct our teapots using her best practices methods of making tea strainers, attaching spouts and considerations for handles. Glazing techniques will be demonstrated.

This introduction to wood firing with Miki Shim will cover the basics of creating work, firing a wood burning kiln and learning the etiquette of being part of a wood fire community.

This workshop is recommended for members with Intermediate level experience (throwing or handbuilding) and students who have taken at least two 6-week classes at our studio.

Week One : December 1, 2, & 3: 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM

3-day work weekend in the studio

We will explore forms and surface textures that highlight the effects from firing in a wood burning soda kiln.

Week Two : December 8, 9, & 10: 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM

3-day work weekend at the kiln (Spring Valley Anagama)

We will meet at the kiln site to prep our bisqueware, glaze and load the kiln.

a 2 day firing will start on Saturday morning and continue into the night for 24 hours until we reach temperature and add soda/salt solution.

Week Three : December 16: 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM

Kiln Opening and Clean-up (Spring Valley Anagama)

We will open the kiln and unload together to review the results of the firing.

Clean-up of the kiln and kiln site will follow as part of our wood fire community responsibilities.

Attendance is mandatory for all the date listed. Please plan accordingly.

Additional clay and kiln space available for purchase. All participants must use workshop clay, one bag included in the price.

Teapot Workshop : Wheel : November 18, 2023

Join me for a two day workshop to make some teapots on the wheel and as time and energy permitting, a full tea service!

We will cover basic tea body types, lid forms and fitting, designing a handle and most importantly, constructing a spout that doesn’t dribble! Glazing for success will be demonstrated.

You should be able to center and make a proper even-walled cylinder using 1.5 lbs of clay to make this workshop worthwhile.

Advanced potters will take advantage of exploring forms and construction to create a full tea service.
